Road Work Notice: Preliminary Plans

Paving, November 16 to 19

Asphalt repairs on our roads, four days, 7:45am to 3:30pm

Preliminary plans, subject to minor changes. The dates are set, but which stretch gets paved on which day may shift a little. Check back here the week before for the final plan, or write to info@mauiranchestates.org with questions.

📅 The Schedule

Sonny Vicks Paving will repair the worst stretches of our roads in November. Work runs 7:45am to 3:30pm each day. The colors match the map below.

  • Monday, November 16: prep at all locations.
  • Tuesday, November 17: paving the pink areas, on Waipalani Rd, upper Kapuai Rd, and Kalipo Pl.
  • Wednesday, November 18: paving the yellow areas, on Maluna Pl, lower Kapuai Rd, Koolau Rd, and North Lanikai Pl.
  • Thursday, November 19: paving the blue area, on South Lanikai Pl.

Once the new asphalt is rolled and has cooled, it can be driven on, so each closure is short. Check the map for your own road.

🚗 Getting In and Out

Some areas may be completely cut off for part of a day while a stretch between them and the way out is being paved. On the Waipalani and Kapuai loop you may be able to go around the other way. The dead ends, Koolau, North and South Lanikai, and Kalipo Place, are harder.

Keep the roads clear of parked cars, trailers, and equipment from November 16 through 19. The crew needs the full width of the road.

If your way out crosses that day’s work, park a car off the road on the open side before 7:45am, and walk to it. Plan deliveries, appointments, and visitors around your road’s day. If there is an emergency, tell the crew or a volunteer at the work site and we will get someone through.

Temporary parking is marked with an X on the map:

  • Kalipo Pl, Tuesday: on Kalipo Pl near 195 and 255 Kalipo. Kalipo should be closed only a couple of hours.
  • North and South Lanikai Pl, Wednesday: at the corner of Kapuai Rd and Koolau Rd.
  • South Lanikai Pl, Thursday: at the corner of Koolau Rd and Lanikai Pl. South Lanikai will be closed all day.

🤝 Volunteers Needed

The paving contract does not include traffic control, and we want to be sure we get what we are paying for. We need neighbors for a few hours on any of the four days, in two roles:

  • Watch the thickness. The asphalt should go down about 2 inches thick before it is rolled, which compacts it to about 1½ inches. Watch it go down, check it with a ruler where you safely can, and note any spot that looks thin. Bring what you see to Todd Johnson; please do not direct the crew yourself.
  • Direct traffic. Stand at the end of a work area, stop cars, and send them around or hold them until the crew says the new asphalt is safe to drive over.

Wear closed toe shoes and bright clothing, and stay clear of the equipment. Fresh asphalt is very hot.
